What is an ElkBros "Teaching Guide" ?
These are not your typical point and shoot guides y’all. They are passionate, skilled, experienced hunters and educators. They will not only help you locate and do everything they can to help you harvest an elk, but they take it step further and help you learn their knowledge, tactics and strategies with the goal of making this a NEXT LEVEL EXPERIENCE. They make this YOUR hunt! Going beyond being a guide and becoming your partner, including you actively in the all part of the process and involving you in a team effort!
What will my Teaching Guide help me with?
Every process of the hunt much like any traditional guide would; insuring your and their safety with the weapon, making sure all game laws are followed, hunt transportation, locating animals, moving in for a killing shot, helping you through your shot process, animal recovery and getting your kill into the cooler at camp.
The difference? At no time is any ElkBros Adventure Client to feel like they are in the back seat, a passenger waiting for the point and shoot command. No prima-donnas in this camp! At the minimum, you are in the passenger seat next to us, our partner, taking in and being a part of every process. When you make your kill… get ready to get dirty!
The Chase Bunk Houses are insulated, have solar lighting and propane wall heaters, two bunks, small bed table and a place for bags and gear. There is not any wired electricity. You can charge items in the main house where we eat & meet.
The Martinez Cabin has solar lighting, charging for phones and small items, shower and outhouse. Hunters sleep in one room with 6 bunks. The other room is for guides and cooks.
What will I need?
There will be showers, water and latrines at both properties. Basic bunkhouse (Chase) or remote cowboy cabin (Martinez) bunk style lodging is availability for rifle. All bunks have new mattresses and mattress covers. You will need your own sleeping bag & pillow.
Winter access to the Chase Headquarters is easy while the remoteness of the Martinez can make access to the cabin difficult in snow.
NEEDS FOR GUIDED (TEACHING GUIDE) RIFLE HUNTS:
- Required New Mexico Hunting Licenses
- Pillow, sleeping bag, personal sleeping mat if you prefer.
- Personal sealable cup/container for water as we provide very limited one use plastic water bottles.
- Personal Hunting Gear; Weapon, equipment, clothing and hunt transportation.
- Snacks or drinks that you prefer over what is supplied
- Coolers/Ice for food and meat
** Access using “two track” roads into the Martinez Cow Camp are very rugged. Depending on vehicle used, it is 8.4 miles and about an hour drive from the main “maintained” dirt road in good conditions.
ADVENTURE CAMP HUNT POLICIES & FAQ's
The first and most important goal is ensuring the safety of both our hunters and ElkBros team members. The second is providing a next level memorable and educational hunt experience.
Alcoholic beverages are fine at the end of the day once back at camp for the evening or once your hunt is over. But for your safety and that of our team members, hunters will not be allowed to participate in any hunting or shooting activities for the balance of the day after consuming alcohol or legal recreational drugs. The use of illegal controlled substances on ElkBros Hunts is strictly prohibited and will end the hunt.
There is a safe way to handle both firearms & bows & arrows. We will review our safety standards prior to going into the field. Your coach/guide will teach and alert you if you are not handling either in the safest way. Please adhere to your coach’s / guide’s instructions, as they are there to make make you a better hunter and your hunting experience both successful and safe.
ElkBros Adventures has a “blood and done” policy for ALL hunts. This means once a hunter draws blood on an animal, that animal belongs to that hunter for the remainder of the hunt.
Every effort will be made to locate, harvest or recover the animal while the hunter is on the ranch with the help & instruction of the hunter’s coach/guide. If the animal is not recovered, we do not allow hunters to hunt for another animal.
Along with education, skill development and an elevated hunt experience, our other main goals are to honor the hunt and to honor the animals we pursue.
We do this by preparing you, both prior to and at camp, to confidently deliver as quick and as ethical of a kill as possible. Added pressure in a simulated & controlled environment is a part of that training process.
Bowhunters and rifle hunters will have to demonstrate proficiency with their weapon prior to going into the field. We will check sight on rifles at 100 yards and bowhunters must be able to put one arrow in a 9” paper plate at 30 yards. If you struggle, we will coach you through it until you can achieve proficiency.
Should we bring an ATV, SxS or Truck?
HUNT TRANSPORTATION & GETTING INTO CAMP
1)If not walking out of camp, your hunt transportation is provided. You will either hunt out of a SxS (Side by Side) or truck to get to areas if needed. From there we hunt on foot.
2) Getting into camp will vary by Ranch:
CHASE: The Chase Hunt Headquarters is only about a mile from Highway 64 and can be accessed by any type of vehicle. However, we highly recommend that you hve a vehicle that can handle transporting meat, antlers, as well as your gear. We will help you get your meat into your coolers, but you are responsible for your meat and processing beyond that. Plan for success!
MARTINEZ: The Martinez Camp is about 8 miles from the “Good” dirt road (Hwy 120). If coming into camp yourself, we highly recommend a 4×4 vehicle that has clearance. The two track is only 8 miles to camp, but it is slow going and will take about an hour.
We meet you at a rendezvous location with all the other hunters and come in together to insure everyone makes it safely.
The two track may have mud, large puddles and has plenty of rocks and bumps along the way. If you do not have a vehicle that can get you in, we will make arrangements to bring you and your gear into camp from the rendezvous location. You will leave your vehicle there behind a locked gate.
**Again, make sure you have a vehicle and equipment to transport meat and antlers. We will help you get your meat into your coolers, but you are responsible for your meat and processing beyond that. Make plans accordingly.
What if I am flying in?
This takes some careful thought and logistics. Here are some things to consider:
PART ONE – MEAT PLAN: First off, if you are flying in to hunt, you have to have a plan for getting your meat/antlers back home. There are several ways to skin that cat, but the critical part will be timing. The meat will have to be processed and frozen, which depends on the processor having an “expedited” price (We will have that info for you on our area), skull will have to be cleaned… So you have to consider how many days that it will take and if your flight home is an open ended ticket that allows for variables. Once that is worked through, you can either plan on shipping the meat from a shipping agent on your way back to the airport, or you can tape up the cooler , the antlers/skull, and check them as baggage (generally way cheaper). Be sure to check with the airlines on their policies with this.
PART TWO – MEAT TRANSPORT: Knowing what has been explained above, the answers to this would be 1) Rent a truck or SUV that can handle Coolers & your gear
Getting your meat and antlers/skull home will be your responsibility. However, we are here to suggest solutions prior to the hunt.
Are linens, pillows, blankets or towels provided?
No. You will have XL Twin sized bunks with mattress and mattress cover. You will need your own sleeping bag or sleep system.
Both Ranches have showers, but you will need to bring all toiletries (except toilet paper), soap, wash cloths and towels.
Is there running water & toilet at Base Camp? Power hook up?
CHASE RANCH –
POWER: The Chase has power hookups in different locations but mainly on the Porch of the Camp Headquarters and inside the Common Room of the Camp Headquarters. Bring your own powerstrip if you need to power/charge multiple items.
WATER/SHOWER/TOILET: There is a shower and toilet. The water used for shower/toilet/cleaning etc, is well water and has a sulfuric smell. Drinking water will be supplied in water jugs and possibly a limited supply of water bottles. Hunters need to bring their own identifiable drinking cup that has a lid or can be closed/sealed.
CELL SERVICE: Depending on your service, you should have cell service from Base Camp at ElkBros Headquarters. However, once you are inside the Chase Canyon, cell service disappears except for high ridge locations.
MARTINEZ CAMP –
POWER: Plan for a remote situation with a solar or fuel generator, solar rechargeable batteries or devices. We do have a solar power and lighting system at the Staff cabin with limited charging abilities if you get in a bind. Fuel Generators must be turned off by 10pm
WATER/SHOWER/TOILET: There is a shower and we have two outhouse toilets. The water used for shower/toilet/cleaning etc, is spring water and is not designated as potable. Drinking water will be supplied in water jugs and possibly a limited supply of water bottles. Hunters need to bring their own identifiable drinking cup that has a lid or can be closed/sealed.
CELL SERVICE: Except for the fortunate connection on some high ridge locations, cell service is basically non-existent. A Sat device (We mostly use Zoleo’s) is your best bet for communication.
We will have a Starlink device that will be in use for at least 30 minutes a day if you need connect to your loved ones back home. We totally understand the need to let your family know you are safe and having an amazing time. However, for the best outdoor experience, we highly recommend that you disconnect from all the other “Real World” craziness you left behind and wanted to get away from.
What if we use a C-PAP machine?
Neither the Chase or the Martinez have power to insure your C-Pap. We recommend bringing a Jackery or similar power station that you can use to insure your machine runs through the night. You will be able to Charge your device at both locations when needed.
What critters should we be concerned about?
New Mexico has both black bears and mountain lions. They are hunted in the country you will be in, so they do have a natural fear. We would say to be respectful of the wild, not concerned. And if you find yourself in an encounter, DO NOT TURN AND RUN. Face them, get big, get noisy and make sure you can defend yourself with your weapon if it comes down to it.
However, a wounded or dyeing elk should also ALWAYS be approached from the rear, weapon ready, and with caution.
