MARTINEZ CAMP

WELCOME TO THE MARTINEZ CANYON CAMP!

PRIZED LAND, PROUD HERITAGE

For ElkBros Adventures, the Martinez Canyon is beyond a hunting lease… this is home.
Part of the CS Ranch family workings, the Martinez Canyon country has a rich history that was built on a hard days work by tough folks that loved and nurtured both the land and it’s animals. What you experience here is the result of a lot of sweat by folks committed to the land, because the land has been, and still is their livelihood. Those original pioneers are now memories seen in remnants throughout the ranch. The CS family legacy is still hard at work throughout this incredible country doing what they have done since 1873. For us here at ElkBros Adventures, to hunt these hallowed lands is something special and reverent.

ElkBros Adventures and our educational based vision takes great pride in being a small part of the CS Ranch & Davis family’s heritage and history of strong work ethic, stewards of the land and the animals that live there. As well as a living example of the western way of life. Their tie to this land is one of love, sweat and tradition. Our goal is to emulate exactly that.

Lodging & Amenities at the Martinez:
The Martinez cabin is a historic, rustic and remote adobe homestead that was kept up over generations and served mostly as a hunting and cowboy cabin over the last 70 years or so. Do not plan on being able to “run” to the store for items during the hunt. Though only 22 miles away, the 8 miles of rough two track road conditions to the “good” dirt road will result in a two hour trip to Angel Fire and back.

The greatest amenity is in the remoteness and incredible beauty that you wake up to every day! The drive in alone will fill your soul with amazing vast beauty. The Martinez cabin has a large front porch, kitchen/eating area, shower and for those on the guided rifle hunts; two rooms with twin sized bunks enough for 10 people (counting guides and the cook!). The bunks all have new mattresses with mattress covers (Bring your own pillow & sleeping bag). Due to the thick adobe walls, the cabin is cool in the heat and warm in the cold. The cabin and rooms are solar powered with an electric fridge, solar lighting and power enough for charging phones.

Additionally, there are two outhouses, a skinning pole with chain hoist and a walk in meat cooler. Other than the day you arrive when we serve dinner only, you will get two home cooked meals daily (lunch & dinner) and coffee & snacks in the morning before heading out on the hunt. The evenings are a special time with the stories of past and present exploits being told and lots of laughter. So come ready to enjoy!

What the Martinez is not:
This is not a lodge and far from some kind of luxury resort. This is a hunter’s hunt in a rustic cabin in some of God’s most beautiful elk country. According to our wives, we definitely aren’t roughing it with a comfortable bed, a warm shower and great hot meals cooked for us. But if you are looking to be pampered, this ain’t the place. What we have we are proud of, but it’s what we have. We don’t try to be what we’re not. So come with grit, love of the hunt and let’s make some memories!

THE MARTINEZ...INCREDIBLE HABITAT THAT CHECKS ALL THE BOXES

Located in New Mexico Game Unit 48, The Martinez Canyon has everything needed for exceptional animals and hunting. The LaGrulla Ridge is the prominent feature and just one of the locations providing excellent bedding areas that flow down to multiple creek and spring fed valleys. Large grass filled vistas, hidden meadows and incredible terrain features check all the boxes when it comes to bedding, feed and water.

You will hear names like Windy Gap, Whites Vega, Kent’s Park, Alien Rock, Valdez , Potato Patch, the Bench and Triangle Park. Names that will be seared into your memory by the incredible beauty and experiences of a lifetime.
**WEATHER CONDITIONS COULD MAKE GETTING INTO THE RANCH DIFFICULT.

BE READY FOR REMOTE

If it doesn’t happen the moment you leave the pavement, the first time you come out of the forest into the immense high vistas, you will be immediately struck by the vastness and majesty of this incredible and remote country.

With Spruce Hill off to your left and Aspen Mountain standing proud off to your right as you bounce across rough mountain roads, the ride-in alone is an experience you will want to call home about! But you will have to wait or write it in a journal, because cell service will disappear with the paved road!

HUNT THE MARTINEZ WITH ELKBROS ADVENTURES!

COACHED HUNTS
Every one of our archery elk hunts are timed to give Adventure Campers the perfect opportunity to call and hunt during “Rut” activity.

**Archery 1 Coached Adventure Camp, September 8th to the 14th – Coach Joe Giglia’s favorite time to be in the woods. This is the transition time when smaller bulls have been gathering cows and the bigger bulls are moving in to take over the harems of cows. A perfect chance to get on a big bull prior to them getting “cowed

**Archery 2 (HIGH DEMAND) Coached Adventure Camp, September 18th to the 24th – This is typically prime time rut with the equinox happening right in the middle. Generally one of the best times for rut and bugling activity. The  big herd bulls are now with their harems and the satellite bulls are still very eager to find their own cows and can be targeted.

**Archery 3 Coached Adventure Camp, October 8th to the 14th – October is the new September! If you ask anyone, it always seems that the rut activity seems to be later and later. The beginning of October can and has lately been on fire! You have the some of the same pros as Archery 2, with herd bulls tending their harem and Satellite bulls eager to run in to a hot cow.

Elk, deer, turkey and bear… the Martinez is amazing!  The property’s 7,000 acres are located in Unit 48 near Angel Fire and Black Lake New Mexico. From incredible vistas that will take your breath away, the Martinez is a gem with springs, creeks, aspens, timber and lots of feed. The perfect elk habitat for holding and growing a healthy herd!

NOW BOOKING FOR 2026!

Always our biggest question: WHICH ELK HUNT SHOULD I CHOOSE ?

Well y’all, every hunt has pros and cons and each hunt brings a different variable to the table. But hopefully these descriptions should help give you a better picture for each:

RIFLE HUNTS

**Rifle 1 hunt (HIGH DEMAND) October 17th to the 21st – Not a single shot has been heard on the ranch and this is the first opportunity to hunt with the rifle.

**Rifle 2 hunt, October 24th to the 28th – Most of the big herd bulls are now in the wings conserving energy, letting the young guys move in. The satellite bulls are moving in to try their hand at being the herd bull. Bugles can still be heard on occasion, but now it’s time to get glassing and find those bulls hitting the parks and the feed.

**Rifle 3 hunt, November 9th-13th – Big bulls have split off and are beginning to bachelor up. They have eating on their mind we glass them up feeding and getting ready for winter. Herds of cows can still be found with those bulls not wanting to leave them.

**Rifle 4 hunt, December 1st to December 5th – December is the best time to locate a big bull. They are bachelored up in bigger groups now, making them easier to spot and are in full feed mode staying out later in the mornings and coming our earlier in the evenings. If there is the addition of a light snow, this can be one exciting hunt!

MARTINEZ CANYON CAMP FLY-OVER

The Martinez Cow camp is a remote destination. Altitude is between 8400 to 9800 feet. The trip is rugged access requiring a 4-Wheel drive vehicle. These ARE NOT gravel roads. If you pull a UTV trailer, we recommend higher clearance and spare tires. Be ready.

Cell service gets left behind once you leave the pavement and once you leave NM-120 (Dirt Road) it’s 8.4 miles of off-road travel that may take an hour for most. You had better have what you need because “Town” is about an hour and a half jaunt.

Weather dependent, winter travel can be very difficult if not impassable at times. Chains, shovel and wench or “Come-along” are important precautions.
