ELKBROS EXPECTATIONS

HUNT POLICIES:
HONORING THE ANIMAL & STAYING SAFE

We do not hunt for trophies; we hunt with respect. Every decision in the wild must reflect the highest level of ethics, mastery, and preparation. These are the non-negotiable rules of our camp, established to protect our team, the hunter and the hunted.

What are the mandatory muzzle-discipline and gun safety rules in camp?
  1. MUZZLE CONTROL IS OUR NUMBER ONE SAFTEY RULE… insuring and being diligent in keeping your muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
    • A safe direction means an angle where an accidental discharge will not cause injury, death, or property damage. This can change depending on whether you are standing on a firing line, walking in the field, or moving through a building.
    • In vehicles, we expect muzzles down and bolt disengaged.
    • In the field, if you are in front of your guide with an immediate shooting situation about to happen and you have not chambered yet, you may chamber up. Otherwise, your guide will instruct you when to chamber a shell. You are never to walk at other times with a shell chambered in your weapon.
    • If your guide is uncomfortable with your muzzle control, you will be instructed on how to correct the situation. Further muzzle safety violations will postpone the hunt and require a discussion or training session back at camp.

2. Treat All Guns as Loaded: Never assume a firearm is empty; always visually check the chamber, receiver, and magazine yourself.

3. All firearms must be completely unloaded, chambers open, and safely cased or racked while inside the camp perimeter.

4. Finger Off the Trigger: Keep your index finger straight and completely outside the trigger guard until your sights are on the target and you have made the decision to fire.

5. Know Your Target and Beyond. Always account for what is in front of your target, what your target is, and what lies behind it, including the risk of a pass-through or ricochet.
NEVER SHOOT AT A SKY-LINED ANIMAL

Both our ranches may have livestock at times and the lower part of the Chase has ranch homes, neighbors in locations and the Lambert Hills subdivision and Village of Cimarron south of our Badlands section. ALWAYS keep this in mind when hunting our lower river section and to the south. If you always know and insure your background/backdrop and never take a sky-lined shot, this will be a mute point.

We do not take marginal shots. If visibility drops below ethical target-identification limits due to fog, heavy snowstorms, or fading dusk, all active hunting is suspended. We navigate back to base camp immediately as a team. No animal is worth a compromised, high-risk shot in poor light.

Alcoholic beverages are fine at the end of the day once back at camp for the evening or once your hunt is over. But for your safety and that of our team members, hunters will not be allowed to participate in any hunting or shooting activities for the balance of the day after consuming alcohol or legal recreational drugs. The use of illegal controlled substances on ElkBros Hunts is strictly prohibited and will end the hunt.

What is the 'Blood & Done' policy?

The ‘Blood & Done’ policy dictates that once an elk is struck and blood is confirmed, that animal is legally and ethically considered yours. Your active hunt pauses instantly. Team efforts shift entirely to locating, tracking, and ethically recovering that specific bull. We do not target secondary animals once blood is on the ground.

If a trail drops off or becomes difficult, we transition immediately into grid tracking. We commit to a minimum of 24 to 48 hours of meticulous search routines—exploring nearby water sources, dense drainages, and typical retreat corridors—before any decision to call off a track is discussed.

This rule anchors our hunting philosophy in true stewardship. It ensures that every shot is taken with ultimate certainty and control. It removes the temptation of hasty decisions, marginal shots or personal ineffective killing ranges and forces us to look at the elk as a precious resource requiring our complete commitment and respect.

What are our weapon proficiency and shooting distance standards?

Ethical limits are defined in practice, not hope. For rifle hunters, solid sight-in confirmation with zero center or 1.5 inches high at 100 yards is expected. If you cannot effectively, dependent on distance, place clean 3″,4″ – 6″grouped shots consistently on a target at a specific ranges, those ranges become off-limits in the field.

Elk hunting demands stamina, persistence and a positive mental attitude. Hunters should be physically prepared to hike high-altitude terrain while carrying gear, and eventually, participate in packing out meat loads if necessary. Your fitness level will directly impact safety, increased or decreased encounters and harvest capabilities.

Yes, absolutely. Upon arrival at base camp, every firearm will be test-fired and verified under ElkBros personnel oversight to ensure nothing shifted during transit or to correct possible effects due to change in altitude. We do not hunt until we shoot and verify. The last place we want to find out there is a problem, is on a live animal.
