First of all congratulations on taking your elk hunting skill sets to the NEXT LEVEL!
We are so excited to be part of your elk hunting journey and share decades of our knowledge and information to help you become a more confident and successful DIY elk hunter. Welcome to the ADVENTURE!
The purpose of this letter is to possibly help you with any questions you might have. Just as if we were partners in the hills, good communication is critical to a teams success! So here we go…
This is NOT a guided hunt. This is a COACHED HUNT
GOAL:
An ElkBros coached hunt is about being on a hunt with everything that you would use on your own if DIY. Your hunt system, your camp system, your own transportation, communications and navigation system while in the field with your coach in a one on one situation to help you identify and overcome possible failure points without having to find out the hard way year after year.
Our hunts are about preparing you with your equipment and then giving you the skill sets, the tools and helping you run with them. Empowering you to make and understand decisions. To learn and use specialized skills. Our goal is for you to become a more knowledgeable, capable, effective, confident and successful DIY elk hunter!
Hunt Info: NM Archery Season. Unit 53, Carson National Forest which consists of 684 square miles (437,822 acres), about 50 percent of that being public land anywhere from 7000 to 13,000 feet in elevation. Unit 53 goes from it’s eastern border of the lush Valle Vidal Unit all the way west to the Rio Grande Gorge. Most roads are decent but could be very rough depending on weather and location. Have spare tires and be ready to take it slow.
Hunt Dates: September 20th-24th. You will arrive at the designated camp location within the unit on the 19th and depart on the 25th. ***Note: Your tag and license will be valid from the 15th to the 24th. You can, and we encourage you to hunt on your own prior to the coached hunt. You will have the skill set that we will be teaching you and it’s a great way to put it to use.
What do you need to bring? Everything you would need on a DIY hunt. (Yes, if you have a UTV or ATV, bring it!) We do provide food… one hot meal a day as well as the makings for sandwiches and snacks. If you have special food needs or things that you prefer, bring those as well.
Prepare for Primitive conditions. We will have a basecamp with a common area covered for eating and getting out of weather. Temporary spike camps may be used towards the end of the hunt and should be prepared for.
We have attached a gear list Click Here as a starting reference point as you will be working with our “Success Squad” Coaches to get it dialed in. You will not need any of the cooking gear other than that for spiking out. We have the camp meals covered.
Coaching: Your coaching prep and training will start before you ever step a foot on the mountain. First, you will receive access to our BaseCamp Online Training Course. Use it, learn it, because you will be living it in a few short weeks! At different times during your training you’ll receive some suggested Lists & Prep Sheets for gear, camp needs, physical prep, shooting prep, best practices and typical routines.
In the coming months, once we develop our schedule as a staff, you will be contacted by our “Success Squad” team members to begin your training in all aspects of the upcoming hunt. Some of those sessions will be shorter or longer depending on your current skill sets, gear knowledge, current set-up, calling ability and overall woodsmanship. In other words, we will try to find your weaknesses and coach them up.
The moment you get to camp and get settled in, the training begins! Each hunter will also have one of the ElkBros trained coaches with them throughout the hunt. For hunts with multiple athletes, it may or may not be the same coach from day to day, but every coach will be sharing their knowledge and techniques at some point. Soak it in.
